If you’re coming from somewhere where the camp sites are spaced apart and you don’t have to deal with your neighbors, you’ll be hard pressed to find good camping around Chicago. When we really need to sit around a fire we head up to the Illinois Beach State Park. It’s right on the Lake. It gets crowed but you can make reservations.http://www.stateparks.com/illinois_beach.htmlSometimes you can get some good spots inland around Starved Rock. We like to go early in the year or later. Starved Rock it’s self is a bit of a dissapointment – way too many people. The parking lot fits like 5000 cars or something.I’ve been to a couple of ok places up into Wisconsin, but for the drive time they aren’t much better than you can find around Illinois. Especially in June, the crowds will be out en mass. I’m looking at the Mississippi river area this year.
