Where is a good place to go tent camping near Aspen and Grand Junction Colorado? Me and my boyfriend are going to Colorado July 13-18th. We’ve googled good camp sites and fishing site, but no luck. We would like to have a camp site with mountain view and close to a river or lake to go fishing, since this is one on the main reasons of going to Colorado. Thanks for any suggestions!

Consider heading down the road a bit from Grand Junction to Moab, UT. LOTS of great hiking, camping, and the Colorado River.

Go south of Grand Junction, CO about 60 miles to the community of Montrose. Due east of the town you will find the road leading into the Black Canyon which used to be a National Monument but is now a park. It is split down the middle by the Gunnison River and the view from the bottom OR the top is nothing short of spectacular. Even the drive down to the bottom of the canyon is breathtaking and once at stream-side, you are looking at some of Colorado’s gold medal waters for exciting rainbow and brown trout fishing. There are a number of camping areas in the immediate area, and Montrose, offers a lot of good tourist attractions and great dining opportunities as well….especially if you like “all-you-can-eat” steak buffets and exceptional Mexican food. Ask anyone in town where to find them and enjoy the hospitality. Be sure to bring good cameras and lots of film or memory card space because this trip will turn you into a dedicated photographer. A lot of visitors conclude that the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one of Colorado’s and the Wild West’s best kept secrets. (Sorry I couldn’t keep a secret!)

Near Aspen, I think the best place to go as far as mountain scenery is the Maroon Bells. Although there is a lake there and a river/stream, I have only occasionally seen people fishing there so I’m not sure what the fishing is like. But the scenery is spectacular and can’t be beat, in my opinion :-).
